Organizations that are inundated with policy, procedures, and red tape create unhappy and dissatisfied customers. Most people do not want to hear why they cannot do something, they want problems solved. Organizations that provide successful customer service programs focus on the customer and do not let bureaucracy interfere with what is best for the customer.

Ideas are stimulated from the reservoirs of the subconscious mind, where most creativity and inspiration is believed to originate. These thoughts and ideas can begin a chain reaction, or a "brainstorm" of other ideas in a process of free association. Brainstorming is a relatively simple procedure. It is basically a group of people tossing out ideas as fast as they can be recorded without outside or self-criticism. There is no discussion, elaboration, or selling of any particular idea. When brainstorming for ideas, everyone is encouraged to think in a free-ranging manner and to offer as many ideas and suggestions as possible.

A Few Basic Rules It is important that everyone in the group understands and follows the four basic rules of brainstorming developed by Dr. Alex Osborn: 1. Criticism is ruled out. Judgment is suspended until later evaluation. 2. Freewheeling thinking is welcomed. The wilder the ideas, the better. 3. Quantity is encouraged. The greater the number of ideas, the greater the chance for good ones. 4. Combination and improvement of ideas is helpful.
